The function of the veins is to transport blood from the tissues of the body to the heart. Since the leg veins must perform this task fighting against gravity, their walls must be sufficiently elastic and the venous valves must function properly. However, when this does not happen, there is a stagnation of blood in the veins and therefore varicose veins appear.
The main risk factors, or those external or internal elements that may favor the appearance of varicose veins include:
• Family predisposition
• Habits or sedentary activities that expect to spend a lot of time standing
• Overweight and obesity
• Hormonal factors (women suffer more from varicose veins)
• In men, there is more in professions that require more hours standing and working in areas close to sources of heat.
